Blue skies, chirping birds, the sun beating down and warming you through the office window, the somehow soothing sound of lawnmowers running in the distance… No way I could possibly be describing a Monday at the office, right? It just so happens that I was describing one of the best starts to a Monday I could have possibly hoped for!
That is, at least until the clock struck 9:30am on this fateful Monday morning… Gradually, the lawn mower in the distance grew louder and almost more menacing as it approached our building. Out of the blue, we could hear the engine die down as the blades disengaged while the lawn mower stayed running for a brief moment before shutting off right outside our office. Simultaneously, our internet went down all through the office… It didn’t take long before we managed to put the pieces together as the owner was standing outside of the office looking at the ground. Yup, Monday had delivered us a special present of a lawn mower completely severing our internet connection to the outside world. I’ll spare you the details, but phone calls were made, solutions were decided upon, and Comcast sent people out to fix the damage that had been done later that day. As a software development/managed IT company, we’re rather reliant upon having internet access in order to accomplish our goals for our clients. Since our communication to the outside world had literally been cut, we were in a position where work came to a screeching halt. Instead of sending everyone home, we decided to take this opportunity to enjoy the beautiful weather, do some team building, and accomplish some tasks at the owner’s lake house/our satellite office. We spent the day in the water trimming away weeds, raking up debris, and overall removing clutter out of the way of the dock that we also installed that day. It hardly felt like work trudging around in waders chopping up weeds because of all the joking around, laughs shared, delicious lunch, and overall camaraderie of a group of coworkers who certainly know how to have a good time while getting work done.
Anyone who follows us on Facebook has seen the outcome of our hard day’s labor up at the satellite office. What wasn’t shown in that picture was all of the sweat, sunburn, and smiles that came out of that experience at the lake. It’s stuff like this, making good out of a bad situation, that makes me love working at OCI!
